Art of Interfaith Understanding: What’s Jewish at the PMA?
The debate about what constitutes “Jewish Art” will not be resolved on this tour. However, we will acknowledge the contribution of a Jewish architect and see a sculpture by a Jewish artist that makes a bold statement about the museum’s mission. We will discuss works of art by Jewish artists and works that illustrate stories from the Hebrew Bible.
We will discover art that alludes to the significance of Jewish religion and culture in Western Civilization. Our looking and talking together will provide a partial answer to the question, “What’s Jewish at the Philadelphia Museum of Art?”
The Art of Interfaith Understanding tours explore the intersection of art and faith.
Facilitators:
Rev. John B. Hougen, PhD, Art of Interfaith Understanding Coordinator and Volunteer Docent at the PMA, and David Straus, Rabbi Emeritus at Main Line Reform Temple, Co-Convener of the Religious Leaders Council of Greater Philadelphia, and member of the Executive Committee of Interfaith Philadelphia’s Board of Directors.
Held in partnership with the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Division for Community Engagement, with tours at the museum.
