On behalf of the Religious Leaders Council of Greater Philadelphia, John Hougen - coordinator of the Religious Leaders Council's Zones of Peace Initiative - presented a Zones of Peace banner to University Lutheran Church.
Speakers responding to the presentation included Rev. Fritz Fowler, Pastor of the congregation; Rev. Patricia Davenport, representing Bishop Claire Burkat, a co-convener of the Religious Leaders Council; leaders of community organizations that partner with University Lutheran; participants in programs; congregation members and students from the University of Pennsylvania. A reception followed.
For 30 years the congregation has organized and hosted “Feast Incarnate,” which brings people from many walks of life together (including those living with HIV and / or homelessness) to learn from one another and enjoy one another’s company.
Innovation Plaza extends the congregation’s welcome mat into public space and has positively transformed the corridor it occupies between the church and the University of Pennsylvania's International House.
As a campus-based ministry, UniLu provides opportunities for young adults to be peacemakers now, and gain experience they will take with them wherever they go. Each graduation day, UniLu sends missionaries for justice into the world.
The Religious Leaders of Greater Philadelphia are grateful to University Lutheran and the other 61 congregations and organizations recognized as Zones of Peace. Each of them has been honored for their exemplary efforts to address the root causes of violence in our region.
