Eboo Patel Awarded the Interfaith Center's Dare to Understand Award

Tuesday, March 7, 2017

"When do they teach you that diversity is also the issues that you don't like? Interfaith leaders build bridges or understanding and cooperation in response to diversity." - Eboo Patel

On March 7, over 700 people from the Philadelphia region gathered in the Sanctuary of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church to hear from founder and president of Interfaith Youth Core, Eboo Patel.

Patel, who recently authored his third book, Interfaith Leadership, spoke eloquently about the deep ethic of interfaith cooperation that compels citizens of this American Democracy to build bridges with people of difference. The Interfaith Center awarded Patel with our Annual Dare to Understand Award, honoring individuals of distinction who courageously cross lines of difference and work together for the common good.

"How are people who orient around religion differently going to live together positively?" - Eboo Patel

The final image left with all of us last night was from the well-known children's story Stone Soup, which recounts a village of hungry people who complain that they have no food to eat. The profound lesson of this tale rings especially true today: The village is fed through the collective cooperation of distinct individuals contributing specific ingredients to create a nutritious, satiating meal.
