Rev. Steven Lawrence

Reverend Steven B. Lawrence has been the Administrative Assistant to the Pastor, Rev. Dr. William J. Shaw, at White Rock Baptist Church, since 1978.  In addition to teaching White Rock’s weekly Bible study, The Bread of Life Fellowship, Rev. Lawrence has been an adjunct professor at Palmer Theological Seminary’s Eastern School of Christian Ministry since 1993.  He helped develop the Church of Christian Compassion’s Compassion School of Ministry in 2017 and is on its faculty, and coordinates Learning Conferences for the West Philadelphia Baptist Congress of Christian Education.

Steven received his B.A in Sociology from Eastern University in Saint David’s PA (1975) and M. Div. from Union Theological Seminary (1978). He currently serves as Board Chair of New Conversation on Race and Ethnicity (NewCORE), a multi-racial, interfaith body developing and engaging in monthly conversation, using sincere questions and active listening, since 2009. 

Rev. Lawrence has served as board chair of the Metropolitan Christian Council of Philadelphia and as a board member continues to serve on the Religious Leaders Council of Greater Philadelphia. He has been an active and supportive presence in Interfaith Philadelphia’s “Walking the Walk” program since its inception, and served as moderator for Interfaith Philadelphia’s “Race and Faith” Civil Conversations event in 2019.

Steven married Cheryl Baker in May 1981. Together they share a love of classic films and music. Steven is a baker known for his lemon and chocolate cakes.
