Religious Freedom, Then and Now: Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Perspectives
Given our historic separation of church and state, how do Islam, Judaism, Christianity, and constitutional democracy interplay? What were the religious influences on the formation of the young nation? Join a moderated panel of historians and theologians who will explore this complicated history, the missteps and successes along the way, and implications for the future.
Topics to be covered include:
- The founding history of each tradition
- The impact of these traditions, which began in some cases as dissenters, on emerging American freedoms, namely the First Amendment
- The impact of “America” upon these religious traditions and what we share in the light of the Semiquincentennial and growing secularism
Panelists:
- Khalid Y. Blankinship, Professor and Religion Department Chair, Temple University
- Heath W. Carter, PhD, Director of PhD Studies, Associate Professor of American Christianity, Princeton Theological Seminary
- Lance J. Sussman, Ph.D., Rabbi Emeritus, Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel
