Dignitatis Humanae: A Civil Conversation Workshop

Join us for an interactive, interfaith Civil Conversations Workshop exploring how historic ideas about religious freedom can help us navigate the complexities of today.

At Old St. Joseph’s Church—Philadelphia’s first Roman Catholic church—worship once took place quietly, out of sight, shaped by a time of both restriction and possibility. Thanks to William Penn’s Charter of Privileges, it became one of the only places in the British Empire where Catholic Mass could be practiced legally—an early example of religious freedom taking root in a diverse society.

Together, in this interactive workshop, we’ll reflect on how these early experiments in freedom connect to our present moment. Drawing from Dignitatis Humanae—a document that affirms religious liberty as a right grounded in human dignity—we’ll engage across traditions and perspectives.

Through guided conversation and practical exercises, participants will:

  • Build skills for listening across differences
  • Practice engaging different views with curiosity and respect
  • Explore how our diverse beliefs and identities can contribute to a more just and compassionate shared life

Whether you come from a particular faith tradition, multiple traditions, or none at all, this workshop invites you into meaningful dialogue grounded in mutual dignity and civic responsibility.

This program is part of the Religious Freedom: Then & Now initiative.
