Ed Beckett

Board Member

An accomplished educational leader, Edward Beckett is the Vice President for Mission, Identity,
and Inclusion at the Gesu School, an independent Pre-K through 8 Catholic public school in North
Philadelphia. In this role, he collaborates with school leaders to integrate the institution’s mission
into all aspects of management, development, and administration. He serves as a strategic advisor
to the President, providing guidance on cultivating relationships, inspiring growth, and ensuring
ongoing formation for the Board.


Prior to his current role, John served as the Principal of Gloucester Catholic High School in
Gloucester, NJ (2013-2021). During his tenure, he led a successful turnaround of the school,
ensuring academic excellence and overseeing staff supervision. Under his leadership, the
graduation rate reached 100%, with an impressive college entrance rate of 99%. John’s strategic
planning and implementation were particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he
played a vital role in coordinating the school’s response, securing crucial funding, and ensuring the
safety of the students and staff. He also deepened the Catholic identity and mission of the school,
founded retreat programs, expanded community service initiatives, and emphasized teaching
philosophy while chairing the Religion Department.


Edward’s dedication to academic excellence extended to his role as Vice Principal for Spiritual
Formation at Boston College High School in Boston, MA (2000-2002), where he pioneered the
Kairos retreats and established Ignatian Spirituality and Formation initiatives. Prior to this, he
served as Chair of Religious Studies and Teacher at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, MA
(1997-1998), where he facilitated the transition to co-education and implemented various youth
leadership, service, and retreat programs.


Throughout his career, Edward has been an active member of various boards and committees,
including the Board of Trustees for Gesu School and HopeWorks in Camden, NJ. He is also a
recognized author and speaker, with expertise in Jesuit slaveholding and its historical significance.
Edward holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Rutgers University, a Masters Degrees in
Philosophy and Divinity from Saint Louis Unversity, Weston Jesuit School of Theology at Trinity
University College in Ireland, and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration from
Seton Hall University.
