Bethany J. Welch, Ph.D

Interfaith Community Cookbook Coordinator

Bethany J. Welch, Ph.D consults for nonprofit clients and teaches urban studies at Rutgers University-Camden. Notable career achievements include collaboratively founding a faith-based outreach center with an immigrant and refugee community in South Philadelphia; co-authoring an award winning book about the participatory action research conducted by that community; and, making research for social change more accessible outside academia. She has a PhD in Urban Affairs and Public Policy from the University of Delaware, an MS in Higher Education Administration from the University of Rochester, and a BS in Communication/Graphic Design from Roberts Wesleyan College.


Welch is an adult convert to the Catholic faith and worships at Old St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where she was first introduced to Ignatian spirituality. This spring, she began a discernment process with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Philadelphia. Her passions include painting, gardening, shared meals, and making Spotify playlists for every mood and season. She lives in South Philadelphia.
