Visions and Values in Early American Art: A Mini-Retreat
Sunday July 13, 2025, 1:30 – 4:30 PM, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Cost: Sliding Scale from $10 to $50, with $30 as the suggested price. Parking and admission to the museum are free thanks to the generosity of the PMA’s Office of Community Engagement. Just a week after July 4th, the group will be guided to engage with two works of art that provide insight into the vision and passion of patriots from the 1700s and 1800s. Then, alone or in pairs, participants will wander the galleries, selecting a work that speaks to them. You will be encouraged to spend ten minutes or more exploring the work and your response. The retreat will close with a tour of the selected works.
Each participant will share their encounter with art from early America and respond to questions and comments from the group. Facilitators: Rev. John B. Hougen, PhD, coordinator of Interfaith Philadelphia’s series: The Art of Interfaith Understanding and a docent at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and Dr. Christine Modey, Director of the Michigan Community Scholars Program at the University of Michigan and Coordinator of the Interfaith Round Table of Washtenaw County, Michigan.
